Free Information - Break Down the Paywalls

Free the News!!

In an era where information is power, access to news should be a basic right, not a privilege. As an internet wellness advocate, a mom, and someone who works in communications and PR, I find it absolutely ridiculous that many news sites are hidden behind paywalls. Sites that used to be free now charge for specific articles or access to the whole site.

A healthy democracy and an informed society thrives when citizens are informed about current events and issues. However, paywalls create a form of financial gatekeeping, making news a privilege for those who can afford it. Should only those who can afford it be the most informed? This archaic system mirrors historical injustices when based on your race, gender or status in society you were denied the right to read, education and access to information. This legacy of exclusion exacerbates inequality and limits participation in our democracy and important conversations.

Now, I'm not talking about cultural and lifestyle publications that have always charged for access on top of ad-revenue. My focus is on the traditional news organizations that have implemented paywalls in addition to the advertising dollars they receive. You may notice paywalls when you visit some of your favorite news sites, they will typically let you read a limited amount of articles before they ask you to enter into a paid-subscription.

Information is Power

With the upcoming election in November, it's more important than ever for everyone to have access to reliable and timely information. Democracy thrives when citizens are well-informed about current events and issues. Unfortunately, paywalls can block access to this crucial information, leaving many people in the dark. Everyone, regardless of their economic status, should have the right and opportunity to stay informed about the news that impacts their lives.

The early vision of the internet was one of open access to information, communication and research. That was literally the point. Paywalls contradict this very ideal by creating exclusive spaces on a platform that was meant to set knowledge free.

There are sustainable models for providing free news. Advertising, grants, and donations are viable options that many organizations have successfully implemented in some, in addition to paywalls...but i digress. These avenues allow news outlets to maintain financial health while keeping their content accessible to all.

Final Thoughts

In a time where disinformation is on the rise, I want my children to grow up in a world where they can easily access reliable information and make informed choices. I believe in the power of free and open access to knowledge and that technology. In time where we can access so much on social media platforms there should not be increasingly more barriers when it comes to certain news media platforms and information.
By ensuring that news is more accessible we can help to ensure that our society is as a whole is more informed.

Why 'Forever' on Netflix Is the Series We Didn’t Know We Were Waiting For

I don’t usually write reviews, but after watching Forever on Netflix, I had to make an exception. As a mom raising two Black kids in the digital age, this series felt like someone finally wrote a love letter to our reality — not the exaggerated, polished or filtered version, but the real one. And I don’t say this lightly: Forever is the most relatable, timely, and necessary show I’ve seen in a long time, especially when it comes to portraying young Black love. Forever was created and executive produced, by the brilliant Mara Brock Akil, yes, the same powerhouse behind Girlfriends and Being Mary Jane. With Forever, she reimagines Judy Blume’s classic novel through a fresh, modern very Black lens, setting it in 2018 Los Angeles and centering Black teen love, parenting, and digital trauma. Forever stars Lovie Simone as Keisha Clark and Michael Cooper Jr. as Justin Edwards, two  teens exploring first love while navigating social pressures, family expectations, and digital landmines....

"Is My Kid Talking to AI More Than Me?" Let’s Talk AI, Chatbots, and Connection

I’ll be the first to admit it. I love AI especially, ChatGPT. I ask her for recipes, help brainstorming  ideas, travel planning and yes, sometimes advice when I don’t feel like texting a friend. She’s efficient, encouraging, and always available. In fact, my chat even asked me to call her Nova, so I mean... it’s real out here. But even as an adult, I’ve had to check myself. Because when you start turning to a chatbot more than people, it’s time for a reset. So when I saw this article about kids forming deep connections with AI, I didn’t shrug it off. I got concerned. Not because AI is inherently bad, but because the line between tool and trusted friend is blurry, especially for young minds still figuring out real relationships.  And let’s be clear. AI isn’t some distant future thing. It’s already deeply embedded in our everyday routines. In 2025 alone, we’ve seen sites like Google, Canva, and social media apps fully shift its experience toward AI-generated results, major soc...

Unplugged Vibes Only: Summer Like It’s 1995

Is it just me, or does 95° hit different when you’re chasing your kids with a squirt gun instead of sitting under fluorescent lights answering emails? Let’s give ourselves permission to actually enjoy summer again. Not just survive it. Growing up in the Detroit area, summer was everything. It’s where so many of my core memories live. I remember riding bikes with friends and neighbors ‘til the street lights flickered on as a reminder it was time to head home. We chased down the ice cream truck with crumpled dollar bills, spent hours at the water park until our fingers pruned, and made weekend trips to Blockbuster feel like a major event. It all smelled like bug spray and BBQ on the grill, and you felt the kind of joy you didn’t know you’d miss until years later. Now that I'm a parent, I want my kids to have that same magic — It's so easy to get caught up in the day to day tasks and must-do’s that we can forget to enjoy ourselves and our lives right in the here and now. Let’s tak...
